About Masala Cafe

Authentic Indian Restaurant

Masala Cafe is an indian restaurant in Newark, New Jersey. It is listed at 27 Academy St, Newark, NJ 07102, which places it among the local businesses of Newark that residents and visitors turn to when they need this kind of service close by.

This group covers Japanese, Korean, Thai, Vietnamese, Indian and other Asian cuisines that are not Chinese, and the etiquette varies by kitchen. Japanese and Korean restaurants often take reservations for dinner and may add a service charge for large groups; Thai and Vietnamese spots are usually walk-in and quick-turnover. Spice levels are frequently adjustable on request at Thai, Indian and Sichuan-adjacent menus, so say if you want it mild or hot. Korean BBQ restaurants typically charge per person for all-you-can-eat service with a time limit, and grills are shared at the table. Vietnamese pho shops post bowl sizes (regular or large) and a plate of herbs, bean sprouts and lime is normal to add yourself. Card and tap-to-pay are widely accepted; cash-only is more common at small family-run counters.

Newark is in New Jersey, in the Northeast, where four distinct seasons shape local life: hot humid summers, snowy winters that can close businesses for a day, and a dense pattern of towns where walking, transit and street parking all matter. Traffic in Newark peaks on weekday mornings and afternoons, so allow extra time then. Addresses read from the street number up to the city, state abbreviation and five-digit ZIP code; the map link on this page shows the exact spot.

My first experience with Indian cuisine in many years turned out very well. Our waiter, Krishna (?), was very helpful in selecting a dish. I had Lamb Tikka Masala, with Garlic Pan, and a Mango Lassi. I enjoyed it all!

First time trying Indian food and I would definitely recommend Masala Cafe. My partner is a picky eater and even he enjoyed the food and wanted to go back. The food is always so good and fresh. The staff is extremely kind and accommodating.

The store hours are 11am to 11 pm however i walked in for a carry out order at 10:12. The staff inside the Resturant told me that they are closed. Little confused as to why the store is open and the staff is at the counter but didn’t want to take the carry out order. If I was a dining that’s a different story but I understand they want to go home. They should update the hours accordingly. Or say sorry we are closing. The staff didn’t not care she just said we are close. If you are closed maybe just lock the door so that way you don’t have to interact with people

Based on my previous experiences with this restaurant, I specifically asked for less oil. You can't complain about taste any time.

What a great little place! Masala Cafe is clean, cozy, and offers quick, friendly service. The food was absolutely deliciousβ€”I had the Lamb Biryani and it was bursting with flavor. You can tell the ingredients are fresh and the spices are spot on. If you’re looking for authentic Indian cuisine, I definitely recommend stopping by. A hidden gem worth discovering!
